Corrosion in Nuclear Systems

This symposium will feature technical papers on materials related issues encountered in the generation of nuclear power energy in light, heavy and advanced nuclear power reactors and plants. Paper can include degradation mechanisms for materials and components in service. Also of interests are papers on materials manufacturing and materials development techniques for current and advanced materials for nuclear power generation, including areas like additive or other advanced manufacturing techniques. Papers are also welcome on materials issues related to Long Term Plant Operations and nuclear waste, including spent fuel extended storage and nuclear waste storage.

This symposium is seeking technical papers that address the measurement or assessment of corrosion in any supercritical system, including supercritical water and supercritical carbon dioxide. Paper can be of a research or industrial nature.

Corrosion in the Biofuel and Biomass Industry

This symposium is to share experience related to material selection / corrosion issues / corrosion mitigation in the biofuels industry. We know that this industry is growing and that the switch from conventional fossil feedstocks to vegetable oil or biomass may cause severe corrosion issues. This symposium will cover both the production of biodiesel and bioethanol.

Corrosion Inhibitor Application on Metallic Surfaces & Cliff Cracauer

This symposium features technical papers on mechanism, modeling, field experience, monitoring and mitigation (design and inhibition). Papers that discuss top of line corrosion in a multiphase wet gas system when water vapor contained in the gas phase condenses on the internal upper pipe walls are encouraged.

Corrosion of Additively Manufactured Materials

This symposium is seeking technical papers and presentations related to the corrosion related issues of additively manufactured (AM) materials. Subjects include but are not limited to: process, structure, performance relationships, post processing treatments and surface finish, corrosion mechanism of AM materials, AM material degradation in corrosive environments, AM materials selection and applications, AM qualification and certification, integrity or risk analysis and assessment, etc.

Corrosion of Bipolar Plates in Energy Conversion Devices

This symposium is focused on advances in the study of bipolar plate (BPP) corrosion in electrochemical energy conversion applications such as fuel cells (FCs) and water electrolyzers (WEs). Organizers will invite active researchers from the industry as well as academia to send their latest findings on related subjects for this symposium. The topics of papers for this symposium will include but are not limited to the estimation of ion release due to corrosion under different operation conditions, corrosion products and their solubility in WE/FC environments, interaction of corrosion products with other components of WEs/FCs, durability of BPPs and stacks, and models for lifetime estimation of BPPs.

Corrosion Under Insulation

This symposium includes technical papers on CUI (corrosion under insulation) which is a driver behind 10% of overall maintenance spending in a typical oil refinery and the reason behind 40-60% of piping failure. This symposium may include papers that address the aspects of CUI and associated external damage mechanisms (e.g., SCC) for thermally insulated piping, equipment, tanks, pipelines, etc. The papers may include (but are not limited to) the testing, pilot trials, case histories, R&D results for various materials (thermal insulations, metals, jacketing etc.) inspection/ NDE tools, as well as preventive measures such as coating, cathodic protection, moisture barrier, etc.

Corrosion Resistant Alloy Development and Applications

This symposium is focused on the development of corrosion resistant alloys using new concepts, the application of these alloys in different industries, characterization of corrosion resistance using a variety of techniques, and life prediction models. Topics such as new alloy formulations, the use of atomic or other materials modeling techniques to develop new alloys, multi-principal element alloys for corrosion applications, alloy cladding or coatings, and failure analysis involving corrosion resistant alloys.

This symposium features technical papers on corrosion phenomena in automotive industry. Papers on new materials, new characterization techniques, innovative approaches, case studies and failure analyses are encouraged.

This symposium is seeking technical papers related to understanding various types of EAC mechanisms including but not limited to hydrogen embrittlement, stress corrosion cracking, sulfide stress cracking, HIC/SOHIC, corrosion fatigue, liquid metal embrittlement, and so on. The papers can cover root cause failure analysis, laboratory testing methods, materials modeling, industry standards development, state of art EAC research reviews, and other relevant topics.

Geothermal Scaling and Corrosion

This symposium features technical papers for experience, testing, study, and practice of alloys and coatings when exposed to temperature of 400C and above. The topics include material properties and performance, corrosion cause and mechanism, analysis and characteristics, alloy and coating development, and corrosion management in the processes of power generation, refining, chemical, and petrochemical industries, such as fossil and hydrogen combustion, solar energy, supercritical fluid, molten salt, steam methane reforming, synthesis gas processes in hydrogen, ammonia and methanol production, etc.

Hydrogen and Emerging Fuels

This symposium will include technical papers related to transportation and storage of hydrogen and other low-carbon fuels. Specific topics may include material compatibility concerns, hydrogen embrittlement and HIC, integrity and risk management concerns, processing, and storage considerations. Additionally, practical experience from operation of pure hydrogen or blended hydrogen / natural gas systems is encouraged to help improve the industry knowledge related to transportation of emerging fuels.

Materials and Integrity in Oil Sands

This symposium features technical papers on oil sands from owner-operators, vendors, consultants, and researchers. Areas of interest include (but are not limited to) corrosion, failures, wear, process, material selection, asset integrity, and can be related to steam-assisted gravity drainage, downhole, mining, extraction, upgrading, pipelines and other surface equipment/facilities.

Measurement and Simulation of Atmospheric Corrosion through Modeling and Controlled Exposures

This symposium features technical papers on the significant economic and social costs of atmospheric corrosion. Reducing these impacts requires, in part, an understanding of the physicochemical interactions between the environment and a material that result in the degradation of relevant properties, techniques to impede these interactions or minimize their effects, and engineering principles that apply a multi-disciplinary approach to designing corrosion-resistant structures, transportation systems, or other high value assets. Paper topics may include, but are not limited to: corrosion model development, refinement, validation, or application to product or material design, characterizing or improving controlled atmospheric corrosion exposures, including test methods and corrosion measurement and characterization techniques, and material development for enhanced corrosion resistance. Submissions from all industries are welcome and encouraged.

Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion

This symposium features technical papers on microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) - corrosion affected by the presence or activity of microorganisms. The diagnosis, mitigation and monitoring of MIC will be detailed across multiple industries including oil and gas, water and wastewater, and maritime. Concentration on any aspect of MIC, including microbiological, chemical, electrochemical, and material science, is welcome. Causal, mechanistic and preventative studies are encouraged.

Mineral Scales: Causes, Cases, and Control

This symposium will feature technical papers that present advances in understanding of the fundamentals of mineral scales formation and control in industrial systems. The focus is on end-user experiences from the process industries such as chemical processing, oil and gas, desalination (membraned-based and thermal), power generation, pulp and paper, pharmaceutical, geothermal, and power generation. Papers will address strategies to control mineral scales with new inhibitors and may also include development and application of new scale dissolving agents.

New Organic Coating Technologies for Reduced Environmental Impact and Enhanced Protection

This symposium features technical papers on recent innovations in coatings science with a direct relevance for protective coating systems include new waterborne hybrid materials marrying conventional resins with fluorine and silicon chemistry, and new crosslinking approaches with lower impact on the environment and applicator health and safety. This symposium will explore the impact of these new innovations in full protective coating systems.

Performance of Galvanic Anodes and Galvanic Cathodic Protection Systems in Reinforced Concrete Infrastructure

This symposium features technical papers on the performance of galvanic anodes and galvanic cathodic protection systems in reinforced concrete infrastructure. Galvanic anodes are used to provide cathodic prevention and cathodic protection of reinforcing steel in concrete. Papers which document long term studies and field installations are encouraged. Performance of new galvanic anodes and updates to existing galvanic protection systems may be included.

Surface Preparation

This symposium features technical papers on the appropriate tools and preparation methods prior to coatings application. Topics may include solvent cleaning, hand-tool cleaning, power-tool cleaning, abrasive blast cleaning, waterjetting, recognizing and repairing surface imperfections, recognizing and removing surface contaminants and assessing surface cleanliness. Work that covers water-soluble salts and their impacts at the substrate/coating interface that can cause premature failure are also encouraged.

Sweet and Sour Corrosion in Oil and Gas

This symposium features technical papers on corrosion related topics that stem from the presence of CO2, and H2S in oil and gas production operations. The forum will look at advancements in the areas of understanding of the corrosion mechanisms, development of prediction models, monitoring and inspection technologies.

Thermal and Cold Spray Coatings

This symposium features technical papers on all aspects of thermal and cold spray coatings used to mitigate corrosion of metallic and reinforced concrete structures with a specific focus on (but not limited to) surface preparation, coating consumable selection, spray method selection, spray parameter development, in-line quality and inspection, testing and qualification, operational experience, cost reduction, maintenance and repair. The subjects to be covered include results of basic and applied research on thermal spray processes and coating materials including field experience on thermal spray coatings, materials, processes and strategies for corrosion control. Papers on thermal spray coatings of zinc, aluminum and their alloys for corrosion mitigation with relevant field applications would be of great interest to the symposium. Contributions on conventional and novel thermal and cold spray coating systems used to prevent corrosion of metal and reinforced concrete structures in all offshore and onshore environments will be considered.
